I want to focus on a topic in the post Detailed Forums User Guide
posted by InfoJeff

I am wondering if you have sent a PM (private message) to someone in a
forum then after logging off they replied to your message. You have no
idea they have replied until you logged back in to the forum the next day.

Below the line is a direct quote from the (forum user guide)
===========================================
phpBB 2.0.0: 4.6: Watching Topics

You may subscribe to topics in phpBB 2.0.0. When a topic you are
subscribed to is replied to, an email will be sent to the email address that
your username is registered to. The email will contain a link to the topic
that has been replied to. You will only receive one email per topic until the
next time you log in to the board.
4.6.1: Subscribing to Topics

To subscribe to a topic, look at the lower left corner of the Topic View
page. Click the small Watch this topic for replies link.

Watch Topic

Additionally, if you post or reply to a topic, you may check Notify me
when a reply is posted to subscribe to a topic.
4.6.2: Unsubscribing from Topics

To unsubscribe from a topic, look at the lower left corner of the Topic
View page. Click the small Stop watching this topic link.

Stop Watching Topic

Alternatively, you may look at your notification email. At the end of the
email (right above the signature) there is a link that will unsubscribe you
from the topic.
=============================================

I use a gmail.com email address in my registration information. I have
my gmail accounts set to pop up a notification on my task bar when I
receive a new email. This is helpful if I am not in the forum and receive a
new message.

As long as you have your settings set to notify on reply, you will get a notification on PM's also. I believe the system treats PM's the same as it treats the postings. I know I always get an email when someone sends me a pm.

The notification of post replies and notification of private messages are 2 separate issues. Each has a "Yes/No" setting in your profile.

Click on the "Profile" button at the top of the screen or go to http://netincome.forumwise.com/profile.php?mode=editprofile

Under the "Preferences" section, you will see many settings. Here are the two to edit:

Always notify me of replies: Yes No

Notify on new Private Message: Yes No

The first is to set the default choice of whether the forum sends you an email when someone replies to a topic in which you have posted. You have the option to change this for each post you make.

The second can only be set here in your profile. This is to set whether the forum sends you an email when someone send you a private message. This could be a new private message, or a reply you a private message you sent them. You do not have the option to change this for each private message you send; you can only set this here in your profile.

I set both to "Yes".

Thanks Jeff,

I always get notification of either but I just realized that when I join a new forum, I never change the default settings. Must be that default is pretty much the same on most forums.

The only time I change any defaults is if for some reason on a given post I unclick the attach signature box. I have done this on occasion when I wanted people to click on the other person's signature file. Exampe: If I am replying to one of my peoples post, I would rather use the reply to bump their post to the top and give them a chance to get someone to look at their url. I don't want my url to show in that case.
